Reality Television Shows and its actors/competitors

I guess the entertainment industry is always interesting to write about. There is just so much that a person can either relate to it or learn about.  You have your actors, singers, movies, and other important people that you can somewhat consider relevant. However, one thing that struck out to me the most is the importance of reality shows and how common they are to our actual life. Everywhere you go you see the cast of the Jersey Shore in a magazine cover, OK! Magazine considers them important to be posting them on the cover and spreads inside their magazine. I was just reading how Barbara Walters considered them one of the important people’s in 2010.

The Kardashians are a pop culture phenomena that cannot even be explained. Their show “Keeping Up” is extremely catchy and addictive. The things they do and what comes out of their mouth is intoxicating, but in a good way. You can always hear someone commenting about the previous weeks episode, about the fights they have, and of course how big or fake is Kim’s butt.

Kate Gosselin, gosh what will we do without that woman. “Teen Mom” and “16 and Pregnant”, who would have thought that being a teen mom and getting pregnant may be so entertaining to young adults,. It’s almost sick in a way, but we keep tuning in. Even those reality competition shows, “American Idol”, “Survivor”, “America’s Next Top Model”, and now “The X-Factor”. Some say a lot of the events are fabricated, the competitors say they were exaggerated, but we are so influenced to be a part of their shows. Everyone wants to be the winner of these competitions, no matter how grueling, disgusting, or exhausting it may be we all want to be those singers, dancers, models, and top dog of those shows. Or at least dream it, if we don’t have the right talent for them.

I am just shocked at how reality television has changed over time, how their influence has shaped our culture, but most of all how we want to be these people and do everything like they do: dress, speak, and act.

  1. So called "reality" tv is an important topic to discuss in this day and age. The question you have to ask now is what do I want to say about reality tv? Its clear that people are fascinated by this shit, so what could we ask that's a bit more specific so that we can get a thesis topic out of it? It may be possible to focus in on "the Kardashian's"--what can you say about the Kardashians (or reality tv) that may be surprising?
